Before floppy disks, computer information was stored on compact cassette. This method of data storage was by no means infallible. Invariably (especially if taped off a friend) the tape would eventually fail to load. And if it did, the dreaded 'syntax error' would appear.
This is the Sinclair Spectrum's precursor to the Windows Blue Screen of Death.
